Moderator: Ryan Gola, Subsea Engineer, ExxonMobil - IOGP Subsea CCS Design Guidance - Barrier and Isolation Philosophy
The IOGP Subsea CCS Expert Group is developing barrier and isolation philosophy guidance for operators and designers of subsea CCS systems. This barrier and isolation philosophy work supplements IOGP Report 665 which was published in 2024 and provides general design guidance for subsea CCS systems. This presentation will introduce the new subsea CCS barrier and isolation philosophy work that is expected to be published in early 2025 and how it relates to guidance in Report 665 and other industry documents.
Panelists:
Mohamed Elshamy, Offshore Engineering Manager, bp - Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) CCUS Project
The aim of this presentation is to examine how the project tackled some of the first of a kind challenges and the design trade-offs that had to be considered, while laser focusing on delivering a competitive project to pave the road for future Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects in the region.
Bruce Denyer, Chevron - Bayou Bend
Gustavo Freitas, R&D Subsea Engineering Manager, Petrobras - HISEP: Innovation that Transforms – Value Creation and Emission Intensity Reduction
The HISEP technology represents a transformative solution for oil and gas production in challenging high CO₂ and high Gas-Oil Ratio (GOR) reservoirs, particularly in Brazil's Pre-Salt fields. This presentation will cover the innovative approach of HISEP in managing CO₂-rich associated gas through subsea high-pressure dense phase separation, enhancing oil processing capabilities while substantially reducing emissions.
We will delve into HISEP's development journey, highlighting its rigorous qualification process aligned with API 17Q standards, including de-risking phases and collaboration with subsea engineering experts to validate high-pressure separation and pump performance. Key stages, such as experimental testing, conceptual studies, and pilot planning, will be discussed, illustrating how these efforts have positioned HISEP as a scalable, impactful technology.
Attendees will gain insights into the practical benefits of HISEP for optimizing production, extending plateau phases, and supporting industry-wide decarbonization efforts. The presentation will conclude with valuable lessons from Brazil’s largest ongoing technological project, emphasizing innovation, risk management, and resilience in advancing sustainable production solutions.
