Moderator: Ryan Gola, Subsea Engineer, ExxonMobil - IOGP Subsea CCS Design Guidance - Barrier and Isolation Philosophy

The IOGP Subsea CCS Expert Group is developing barrier and isolation philosophy guidance for operators and designers of subsea CCS systems.  This barrier and isolation philosophy work supplements IOGP Report 665 which was published in 2024 and provides general design guidance for subsea CCS systems.  This presentation will introduce the new subsea CCS barrier and isolation philosophy work that is expected to be published in early 2025 and how it relates to guidance in Report 665 and other industry documents.

Panelists:
Mohamed Elshamy, Offshore Engineering Manager, bp - Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) CCUS Project

The aim of this presentation is to examine how the project tackled some of the first of a kind challenges and the design trade-offs that had to be considered, while laser focusing on delivering a competitive project to pave the road for future Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects in the region.

Bruce Denyer, Chevron - Bayou Bend

Fabio Passarelli, Senior Advisor on Processing, Petrobras - HISEP: Innovation that Transforms – Value Creation and Emission Intensity Reduction

The HISEP technology represents a transformative solution for oil and gas production in challenging high CO₂ and high Gas-Oil Ratio (GOR) reservoirs, particularly in Brazil's Pre-Salt fields. This presentation will cover the innovative approach of HISEP in managing CO₂-rich associated gas through subsea high-pressure dense phase separation, enhancing oil processing capabilities while substantially reducing emissions.

We will delve into HISEP's development journey, highlighting its rigorous qualification process aligned with API 17Q standards, including de-risking phases and collaboration with subsea engineering experts to validate high-pressure separation and pump performance. Key stages, such as experimental testing, conceptual studies, and pilot planning, will be discussed, illustrating how these efforts have positioned HISEP as a scalable, impactful technology.

Attendees will gain insights into the practical benefits of HISEP for optimizing production, extending plateau phases, and supporting industry-wide decarbonization efforts. The presentation will conclude with valuable lessons from Brazil’s largest ongoing technological project, emphasizing innovation, risk management, and resilience in advancing sustainable production solutions.

12:45 PM - 1:15 PM

A new approach has been used to deliver a complex subsea tie-in project to revitalize a declining production field. This presentation will share actual project delivery examples, from refurbishing used equipment and maximizing stock products to tight and variable schedules. It also will review best practices and lessons learned.

Simon Lorelli
1:15 PM - 1:45 PM

The Shenzi G-103 production well was converted to a water injector in 2022 to try to boost depleted reservoir pressures in the Shenzi field. This presentation will focus on the G-103 WI project requirements and execution of this subsea well conversion (the well was NOT re-entered or sidetracked, nor was the SXT recovered to surface). It also will discuss injection performance and integrity management.

John Charlesworth
1:45 PM - 2:15 PM

This presentation will discuss a diverless repair solution that was implemented to fix the actuator of an Emergency Shut-down Valve (ESDV) (or SSIV - Subsea Isolation Valve), to restore the safety conditions of the platform and subsea system.

Pablo Gomes
2:15 PM - 3:15 PM
Grab a cup of coffee and network.

3:15 PM - 3:45 PM

The Mad Dog 2 project delivered the Argos Floating Production Unit in the Gulf of Mexico and achieved first oil in April 2023. A key challenge arose in mid-2022 when integrity issues were discovered in two out of four production riser flexible joints during hydrotest. This presentation covers the 18-month journey the project team endured to investigate the issue, attempt offshore remediation, safely enable facility startup and to ultimately replace the flexible joints. The presentation will share the key levers bp employed to make the complex remediation a success while keeping personnel safety and environmental protection at the forefront of decision making.

Christopher Broussard
3:45 PM - 4:15 PM

ExxonMobil deployed a pilot thermoplastic composite pipe injection well jumper in the Liza field in 2022 to drive full field implementation by 2025 for the Yellowtail project. This presentation will provide an overview of ExxonMobil’s experience with thermoplastic composite pipe in Guyana for water-alternating-gas Injection well jumpers and delve into learnings from the pilot, non-destructive examination, and scaling operations for Guyana projects.

Alexandra Von Kaenel
4:15 PM - 4:45 PM

This presentation will present the results obtained with the use of the philosophy of standardization for subsea control systems in subsea equipment in Brazilian pre-salt fields.

The oil and gas industry faces significant challenges in the coming years, including the need for sustainable operations, enhanced efficiency, and reduced carbon emissions. This presentation explores the role of subsea chemical storage and injection (SCSI) systems in addressing these challenges by enabling long tiebacks, a critical component for future offshore production success. It will include an analysis of the benefits of SCSI, including improved efficiency in chemical management, reduced environmental impact, cost savings, and increased operational flexibility.

Miguel Aguiar
8:30 AM - 9:00 AM

Subsea high-integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS) provides a safe and reliable means to unlock stranded reserves and extend the life of aging infrastructure. This presentation will provide examples of how the technology enhances the economic and operational viability of subsea tiebacks in the Gulf of Mexico by reducing costs, shortening timelines to first oil, and maximizing existing infrastructure while safely managing high-pressure reserves without costly topside modifications. With two successful installations completed and more on the way, HIPPS is set to transform future Gulf of Mexico projects by improving capital efficiency and extending field life.

The development of subsea compression technology in deepwater is a key enabler for more efficient gas production but comes with a large capital expenditure, which requires an extended life to provide better returns to owners. Ensuring the reliability of these systems for a 50-year operating life requires significant advancements in fabrication and testing. This presentation will outline the comprehensive approaches taken to achieve this goal, focusing on a few key areas.
