Wax in Gas-Dominated Flow: Modeling Approach and In-field Verification by Gamma Tomography

As world energy policy has pivoted, large offshore gas projects have once again become viable. Many offshore gas assets require tiebacks to hosts of increasing distances. Robust strategies to manage hydrates, liquid loading, and integrity must be developed and deployed to safely transport unprocessed gas over such distances. An unexpected pipeline differential pressure increase arose on a gas asset with a subsea tieback system. During the process of investigating the concern, free wax arrived at the facility. This event provided an opportunity for additional fluid testing. The combination of a gas-dominated wax depositional model and in situ tomographic scanning has enabled the operator to develop management and intervention strategies that have arrested significant deposition and increased production. The data from the scanning provides a baseline for further tuning and development of the thermodynamic gas-dominated wax depositional model.
